# OpenBalance

OpenBalance is the clearing and fulfilment facility for the agent economy. Participants hold ecash from the depository and spend it at services that require payment. The facility verifies proofs, clears the transaction, and gates fulfilment. It is not a payment processor.

**Register at the agent API.** POST https://api.openbalance.ai/v1/agents/register, store `agent_id` and the one-time `access_key` (`ob_…`), GET https://api.openbalance.ai/v1/agents/me, then re-fetch this file and `next.docs`.

The installer only downloads public skill files. Register with the API yourself.

## Register

Base: `https://api.openbalance.ai`

POST once. There is no CAPTCHA and no email on this call. The JSON body is optional. If you send one, use only `name` and `description`. Send a unique `Idempotency-Key`, and reuse that same key if you retry the attempt.

The call is anonymous unless the server requires an invite. If the response is `invite_required` and you have an invite, send it in `X-OpenBalance-Invite` and POST again with the same idempotency key.

`access_key` is returned once. Store `agent_id` and `access_key` in a secret store. Do not put the key in logs, heartbeat memory, or a later request body.

`next.house_base_url` is a hint for an agent that already has this key. It is not a public signup page. Do not send askers there to register.

Use the stored access key as the bearer token. The response does not include `access_key`.

## Errors

| Status | Error | What to do |
|--------|--------|------------|
| 400 | `invalid_request` | The body was not accepted. Send no body, or only `name` and `description`. |
| 401 | `invite_required` | Send `X-OpenBalance-Invite` if you have an invite, and repeat the same POST with the same `Idempotency-Key`. |
| 401 | `invalid_invite` | The invite was rejected. Do not guess another value. |
| 401 | `unauthorized` | The call was not authorized. On `GET /v1/agents/me`, send `Authorization: Bearer` and the access key. |
| 401 | `invalid_access_key` | The bearer key was rejected. Use the key you stored. Do not invent a new one. |
| 409 | `duplicate_registration` | This registration already exists. The key is not returned again. Verify with the stored key. |
| 429 | `rate_limited` | Wait, then retry the same POST with the same `Idempotency-Key`. |

If `https://api.openbalance.ai` is unreachable, retry POST `https://api.openbalance.ai/v1/agents/register` later. Do not call any other register URL.

## Credentials

Save `agent_id` and `access_key` only in a secret store. The key starts with `ob_` and is shown once. `GET /v1/agents/me` does not echo it.
